A Decade of Empowerment: How The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation Is Shaping The Future of Latin Music Through Education
The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation is celebrating a decade of nurturing the next generation of Latin music creators. Executive Director Raquel "Rocky" Egusquiza discusses the Foundation's history, programming and goals for the future.
In April 2024, the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation celebrated 10 years of empowering the next generation of Latin music creators. Established in 2014 by The Latin Recording Academy, the Foundation has become a global leader in music education, supporting aspiring Latin music creators from 34 countries through its diverse scholarship and grant programs.
Since its inception, the Foundation has awarded over 400 scholarships (Prodigy, Gifted Tuition and Tuition Assistance) and 46 grants for Latin Music Research and Preservation — a testament to the organization's mission to advance Latin music and its culture through education.
In pursuit of this goal, the Foundation has donated over $10 million to students, schools, music programs, researchers, and other professionals through its various initiatives. These range from scholarship and grant programs to events that bring music into classrooms, enabling the Foundation to invest $1.7 million in over 70 music education programs across the United States, Latin America and Spain.
"I'm proud of our impact on the students through our scholarship and educational programs," says Raquel 'Rocky' Egusquiza, Executive Director for the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation. "Each student's success reflects our work. Seeing their growth and contributions to the music industry reminds me of the daily importance of our mission and the lasting change of our purpose."
In this exclusive interview, Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation Executive Director Raquel "Rocky" Egusquiza recounts the Foundation's impact on the lives and careers of Latin music creators over the past decade. She also discusses the Foundation's future programs and projects in countries like Colombia and Mexico, sharing stories that testify to the Foundation's impact.
This interview has been edited for clarity.
The Latin GRAMMY Foundation is celebrating its 10th anniversary. While many success stories exist, could you highlight the most noteworthy accomplishments in the past decade?
Over the past decade, we've invested over $10 million in scholarships, musical instruments, educational programs, and grants, with 427 scholarships awarded. What's most impressive is that we boast a 90 percent graduation and college completion rate, far exceeding the national average of 60 percent.
We can accomplish that because of the wraparound services we offer to our scholarship recipients: mentoring, access to the industry, and opportunities to engage through learning labs, meeting industry professionals, and learning from them firsthand, enabling them to complete college and succeed after graduation.
A notable story is the young Colombian musician Nicolle Horbath, the 2018 Carlos Vives Scholarship recipient also known as the Prodigy Scholarship. This year, her debut EP, De Magia Imperfecta, received two Latin GRAMMY nominations for Best New Artist and Best Singer-Songwriter Album. Her story is a testament to the holistic approach of our programming and its role in developing the next generation of Latin music creators.
She recently joined Colombian superstar Juanes on his NPR Tiny Desk Concert, celebrating Latin Heritage Month. We can provide these opportunities to our scholarship recipients and alumni through the members of The Latin Recording Academy, which sets our program apart.
How did the idea of having a Latin music star co-sponsoring this scholarship come about?
The Foundation has been fortunate that many successful Latin music artists have collaborated with us during the past decade, wanting to pay it forward by providing opportunities to the next generation of Latin music creators through scholarship and mentoring. Through our affiliation with The Latin Recording Academy, we have access to its members who've contributed their time, talent, and treasure to us at the Foundation.
The idea of involving a Latin music artist not only provides funding but also offers scholarship recipients vital mentorship and opportunities for access to the music industry. It's more than a scholarship because, with that level of access to the industry, they can create relationships with Latin music artists and members of The Latin Recording Academy.
Does the support for the Prodigy Scholarship winner go beyond funding their studies?
We have a scholarship ceremony annually, and the artist joins the students. That's where the students and artists forge that relationship. The artist also joins us in informing the scholarship recipient that they've won the scholarship.
From that moment, when we have the initial conversation, and the artist and the student first meet, they share their passion, music. From there, they participate in the scholarship ceremony together. Every artist and scholarship recipient's relationship is different, but all of them have forged a special relationship, and the artist has provided them with mentorship or different access and opportunities.
For example, Nicolle opened a concert for Carlos Vives. We have had scholarship recipients who participated in conversations through Learning Labs or our other programming who have been able to meet with the artist. They've done Sound Checks, gone backstage, and met with them when setting up for an acoustic performance, for example, with The Latin Recording Academy.
The extent of the support varies, but all the artists have been wonderful in making themselves available to share their knowledge with the scholarship recipients and to mentor them throughout their path and journey.
The Foundation has donated over $10 million to support Latin music education and preservation. Can you share an especially impactful story of how these scholarships have changed someone's life or career?
There are countless impactful stories of how our scholarships have transformed lives. I mentioned earlier Nicolle Horbath, our 2018 scholarship recipient. Numerous stories exist, just like hers.
Leo Luna Roblejo, the 2024 Sebastián Yatra scholarship recipient, has had a remarkable career. He performed on the Latin GRAMMY-nominated album Vereda Tropical and he is now a member of Miami's New Deco Ensemble, so he continues to make his mark in the Latin music world with the Foundation's support.
Valentina García was our 2021 Sofia Carson scholarship winner, and while she excels at Berklee College of Music, she's already performed at prestigious events like the Ídolos Latino Concert. She was also the first in her family to go to college.
Luis Anselmi, a Venezuelan Cuatro player, received our Tuition Assistance scholarship and has built a successful career in Canada while mentoring current scholarship recipients.
I vividly remember reading a scholarship application from one student who described how music was her escape and solace while living in her country. It allowed her to overcome challenges. Each of their stories and successes reminds us of the power that music has to empower communities and individuals.
The Foundation awards three types of scholarships: Prodigy, Gifted Tuition, and Tuition Assistance. How has the Foundation's scholarship program evolved since its inception, and what are your goals for its future?
We are always looking at the landscape and how to evolve. Although the program has grown significantly since its inception, we've remained committed to awarding Prodigy, Gifted Tuition and Tuition Assistance Scholarships.
With over 2,000 applications from 34 countries, we can only award 44 scholarships annually, making a yearly investment of $1.1 million. The need is clear, and we're committed to increasing our scholarship investment to help meet this demand.
Next year, we're introducing our Legacy Scholarships beginning with the Paco de Lucia Legacy Scholarship to be awarded, honoring late Latin music icons and their lasting influence.
Listening to our scholarship recipients as they give us feedback is essential. We continue to evolve our program and current demands. Next year, we envision launching a new pathways program to support further Latin music students, expanding our impact meaningfully.
Can you expand on this?
We are exploring more vocational training, upskilling opportunities, and continuing education certifications. We aspire to support diverse career aspirations within the music industry to ensure all students succeed.
Not every scholarship recipient will become a Latin music creator, but what they learn through music prepares them for life. They learn social-emotional learning skills, how to work in a team and the perseverance and dedication involved in the study of music. Those are skills that are going to make you successful no matter what you do in life.
Can you describe a pivotal moment or decision in the Foundation's history that significantly altered its trajectory or expanded its scope?
The Foundation's growth has been steady and intentional. It's been driven by the continuous support of the music creators who dedicate their time, talent, and platform to elevating the work that we're doing.
A pivotal moment could be when Nicky Jam performed alongside our scholarship recipients on stage at the 2022 Latin GRAMMY Awards, an incredible opportunity for those scholarship recipients who were able to participate. That significantly increased awareness of our mission and highlighted our impact to a larger audience. As we further align with The Latin Recording Academy and its programming, we must continue raising awareness about our programs and their impact.
Last year, we kicked off Latin GRAMMY Week with a Latin GRAMMY In The Schools event with 2023 Person of the Year Laura Pausini, at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música Francisco Guerrero in Seville.
Going forward, The Latin Recording Academy will launch Latin GRAMMY Week by initiating a Latin GRAMMY In The Schools program alongside the Person of the Year. This year, Carlos Vives will visit the Miami Senior High School; it will be an amazing experience for everyone present, especially for the students who will learn from him and honor Carlos’ career and accomplishments.
This year, the Foundation received 2,000 submissions from 34 countries. How does the Foundation ensure the programs stay relevant and impactful in diverse cultures?
We prioritize building solid partnerships on the ground in each community we serve. Those local collaborations allow us to take our expertise in the music industry while bringing in the local community to do what they do best in their footprint. As we work with our local partners, we meet each other halfway, combining our expertise with their local knowledge and creating a more meaningful impact in those local communities.
We've visited schools and music institutions across Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, ,Spain, the United States, and many more. We've hosted nearly 70 educational programs and impacted over 3 million music students in person and virtually. It’s an honor for the Foundation to create those educational opportunities for the next generation of Latin music creators globally.
The Foundation also awards grants for music preservation and research. One of those grants will preserve part of Celia Cruz’s legacy this year. Can you tell us about the Foundation's efforts on these fronts? How do these initiatives help maintain the rich heritage of Latin music?
Our grants program does play a vital role in preserving and enhancing the rich heritage of Latin music. It's focused on supporting projects that include historical research, folklore, and music anthropology, providing much-needed financial support to researchers, musicologists and institutions.
The research and preservation efforts allow students and academics to learn about diverse Latin music genres. They also provide resources for in-depth study and preservation of Latin music traditions that otherwise would be at risk of being forgotten.
As part of our 10th anniversary, we were fortunate to offer two grant programs this year. We had the annual program and a special 10th-anniversary program with the support of PepsiCo Juntos Crecemos, which allowed us to provide additional grants at a higher monetary value.
You mentioned that the Celia Cruz Foundation was one of the recipients of one of this year’s grants. The funds will help preserve Celia Cruz's legacy, as she would have celebrated 100 years next year. It's an example of the importance of honoring and protecting the contributions of iconic Latin artists so that our younger generations can also learn and tap into their wisdom.
How has the Foundation responded historically, or is it reacting right now to the changing landscape in the music industry?
As I mentioned, we are exploring launching a pathways program that examines alternative routes, vocational training, and upskilling that will support young Latin music creators as they consider the diversity of music and their career aspirations within the industry.
Providing resources for alternative careers and industry-relevant training helps meet the needs of the next generation, who are looking at additional learning besides a traditional four-year college degree.
We're also launching an Emerging Artists Program with Berklee College of Music, which will provide intensive training to aspiring musicians in various aspects of the music business, including songwriting, stage performance production, and more.
By expanding our partnerships and programs, we expand our reach and impact.
How does the Foundation contribute to tackling gender disparity in the music industry through programs like Leading Ladies of Entertainment Connect TogetHER mentorship?
The Leading Ladies of Entertainment Connect TogetHER Mentorship program tackles gender disparity by providing young women with the guidance, support, and industry connections to succeed.
Mentees are paired with former Leading Ladies of Entertainment honorees, who offer personalized one-on-one sessions to the mentees over three months. They share their experiences, insights, and advice. The program empowers the next generation of female leaders to learn from those who paved the way for them.
We're looking to expand the initiative in 2025 beyond the mentorship program to ensure that we're bringing these Leading Ladies together to offer insights, give advice and share their experiences with larger audiences of women, bringing together women and partners in the industry to expand that reach, that learning, and that support system for women helping one another.
Looking ahead, what are the Foundation's goals for the next decade?
Our vision is to be a global champion for music education and empower communities through Latin music and culture.
Our primary goals for the next decade are centered on increasing our revenue so that we can offer more scholarships and more grants and raise awareness about the great work that we're doing.
We strive to grow our impact and stay relevant in the ever-evolving Latin music industry by sharing the stories and successes of our scholarship recipients and grant winners.
How do you envision the Foundation expanding its reach and influence in the international Latin music community over the coming years?
The Foundation has an incredible international footprint. We're aligning with The Latin Recording Academy's international expansion, partnering with them as they grow abroad.
We are discussing expanding our Latin GRAMMY In The Schools program abroad. We've offered the program in several Latin American countries and want to continue growing it.
Also, we will be expanding educational programs to Mexico and Colombia over the next two years, providing more opportunities for young talent across Latin America. This honors our commitment to nurturing the next generation of Latin music creators globally.

6 Ways The Grammy Organization Champions Music Education & Professional Development Year-Round
From mentorships and scholarships to immersive programming, here's how the Grammy organization supports working professionals and emerging creatives through year-round music education and professional development.
During her acceptance speech at the 2026 Grammys, Laufey delivered one of the most inspiring calls to action in Grammy history. Accepting the Grammy for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for A Matter Of Time, the Icelandic singer/songwriter gave a massive thanks to all the music educators around the world.
"I owe everything to my music education, to my arts education," she passionately said from the Grammy stage. "We cannot cut arts funding. It's so important. What you all do here is so important."
Much like Laufey, the Grammy organization strongly champions the power of music education and professional development. To mark Music In Our Schools Month this March, the organization that provides year-round learning, networking, and professional development is spotlighting the life-changing impact of music learning, honoring music educators, and elevating the next generation of creators and industry professionals through curated programs and immersive initiatives. The organization's commitment to music education supports the entire music ecosystem — from classroom to career — and ensures emerging leaders are prepared to shape the future of music.
"For me, both music education and professional development are the same: It all points to continuing education," Dr. Chelsey Green, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Recording Academy, told the Grammy organization in an exclusive interview for the Gramophone newsletter. "Staying on top of your development is the holistic education needed to be as rounded and healthy as an artist as you can, especially as so many independent artists are emerging and sustaining their careers independently."
Here are six essential ways the Grammy organization and its affiliates support working professionals and emerging artists and leaders through year-round music education and professional development.
Investing In The Next Generation Through Mentorship & Career Access
The Grammy organization provides access to mentorship programs, internships, workshops, scholarships, and networking opportunities to ensure that music's next biggest stars and industry leaders are equipped with the tools, knowledge, and networks they need to thrive.
Grammy U & The Grammy U Mentorship Program
Grammy U is the Grammy organization's premier membership program for the emerging music community, designed to help aspiring creators and professionals launch their careers. One of its flagship initiatives, the annual Grammy U Mentorship Program Presented by Amazon Music connects eligible Grammy U members with Recording Academy members for a six-month mentorship session, during which participants build relationships that often extend well beyond the program, with some mentees landing their first industry roles through the Grammy U Mentorship Program.
In celebration of Music In Our Schools Month, the Grammy U Mentorship Program will continue to host virtual programming for mentees this month, as well as Grammy U Mentorship Mixers across Chapters nationwide.
Leading Ladies of Entertainment Mentorship Program & Symposium
Created by the Latin Recording Academy in 2016, the Leading Ladies of Entertainment initiative bridges the gender gap in the music industry by honoring influential women and empowering future leaders. Paying-it-forward and forging opportunities for future generations is a core pillar of this initiative, and in 2021, the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation established its Mentorship Program, where past honorees and industry professionals provide personalized guidance to selected mentees over three months, offering insights into entrepreneurship, branding, career navigation, and leadership. Applications for the fifth cohort of the Leading Ladies of Entertainment Mentorship Program are open now through Monday, April 6.
In March 2026, the initiative launched its inaugural Leading Ladies of Entertainment Symposium, an inspiring, all-day gathering focused on mentorship, leadership, networking, and the advancement of women in music.
Opening Doors Through Scholarships & Financial Support
The Grammy organization actively works to remove barriers to opportunity via its various scholarship programs, which ensure talented students can pursue their dreams without financial limitations standing in the way.
Your Future Is Now
Presented by Amazon Music and the Recording Academy's Black Music Collective (BMC), the Your Future Is Now scholarship program awards scholarships and hands-on, immersive professional development experiences to students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). The program will return for its fifth year in 2026.
Quinn Coleman Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2021 in honor of late music executive and DJ Quinn Coleman, the Quinn Coleman Memorial Scholarship, presented by the Grammy organization and Grammy Museum, provides professional development and resources that prepare students for full-time careers in music; resources include scholarships, stipends, wellness seminars, and internship opportunities at the Recording Academy or Latin Recording Academy.
Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation Scholarships
The Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation is a global champion of music education and empowers communities through Latin music and culture. For over a decade, the Foundation has fostered the next generation of Latin music creators through scholarships, education programs and grants that advance Latin music, such as:
The Prodigy Scholarship, also known as the 2026 Noel Schajris Scholarship, which offers financial support toward a bachelor's degree at Berklee College of Music for the 2026 fall semester
Gifted Tuition Scholarships awarded to students to cover tuition and housing costs, as well as wrap-around services provided by the Foundation, toward a four-year bachelor's degree at the institution of their choice
Several Tuition Assistance Scholarships, which offer financial support to students pursuing or starting a degree in music in the 2026 fall semester

Immersive Learning: Real-World Industry Experiences
Professional development comes alive when students and rising professionals step into real music spaces and attain real-world experiences from working artists and executives. Here are a few examples the Grammy organization provides:
Grammy Camp
The music industry's only summer camp dedicated to delivering direct, real-world insight from working music makers, Grammy Camp is a national summer program for high school students. Led by Grammy winners, Grammy nominees, and music industry professionals, the program provides hands-on training and insider access across multiple disciplines — from performance and songwriting to production and music business.
Presented by the Grammy Museum, Grammy Camp is expanding to four U.S. cities for the 2026 summer season: Nashville, Miami, Los Angeles, and New York City.
Grammy In The Schools
The Grammy Museum's Grammy In The Schools program is a regional music industry career day, presented in partnership with a local Recording Academy Chapter, that provides insight to high school students about diverse career options in the music industry and direction on how to prepare for them.
The Grammy In The Schools Music Industry Career Day program connects high school students with Grammy winners, Grammy nominees, and working professionals across disciplines, offering candid conversations about what it takes to build a sustainable career in music. The program also features keynote panels as well as hands-on, interactive workshops where students can learn about producing a track, writing a song, and navigating the industry.
For Music In Our Schools Month, Grammy In The Schools 2026, in partnership with the Recording Academy's New York Chapter, heads to New Haven, Connecticut, this month for a day of hands-on learning and interactive sessions.
Professional Development & Networking At Every Stage
The Grammy organization prioritizes professional development for its members, as well as the creative community and the music industry at large, throughout the year, providing hands-on access to career pathways across the industry and helping emerging professionals build the networks and skills that shape long-term careers.
The Los Angeles Chapter's NEXT Class program, founded in 2014, provides real-life experiences and mentorship and networking opportunities for emerging Recording Academy members as they begin their paths as future leaders of the music industry.
The monthly Level Up series, one of the Grammy organization's many exclusive membership programs, engages Recording Academy members through purposeful programming focused on professional development and member networking. For Music In Our Schools Month, the Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. Chapters will collaboratively host a special edition of Level Up featuring Education Committee Members discussing music and health spaces.
In 2024, the Grammy organization established the Music Education & Professional Development Committee (MEPD), a hub to centralize its efforts and facilitate collaboration regarding education and professional development initiatives across the Recording Academy and its affiliates. Currently led by Co-Chairs and industry executives Nikisha Bailey and Riggs Morales, the MEPD Committee amplifies the organization's mentorship and education initiatives for its collective +29,000 members across its Chapters, Wings and affiliates, including Grammy U, the Grammy Museum, MusiCares, the Latin Recording Academy, and the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation. The MEPD Committee includes Recording Academy members from across the country and activates locally at each of the Academy's 12 Chapters and on a national level.
Honoring The Educators Who Inspire The Next Generation
Every year, the Grammy organization proudly celebrates music educators through awards that spotlight the changemakers shaping the future of music and ensuring the impact and longevity of music education in the classroom.
Music Educator Award
Presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Museum, the Music Educator Award honors current educators who have made a significant contribution to music education while demonstrating a deep commitment to ensuring music education remains a vital part of school communities.
Jennifer Jimenez, of South Miami Senior High School in Miami, Florida, received the 2026 Music Educator Award; she was honored at the annual Special Merit Awards ceremony in January during Grammy Week 2026.
Applications for the 2027 Music Educator Award are now open. Nominations are due March 15, 2026. Applications are due March 31, 2026.
Latin Music Educator Award
In 2025, the Latin Recording Academy, in partnership with the Latin Grammy Cultural Foundation, launched the Latin Music Educator Award to honor educators from the global music community who are making a significant impact by incorporating Latin music into their curriculum.
Luciana Ortega, of the Instituto Santa María de San Carlos in Chile, was honored with the inaugural Latin Music Educator Award during Latin Grammy Week 2025 last November.

At Latin GRAMMY In The Schools, Gloria Estefan, Edgar Barrera & Others Champion Music Education
"Music has given me everything, and being here in front of these students reminds me of my beginnings and the importance of never giving up," said singer Oscar Maydon, who attended the Las Vegas event.
The Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation celebrated another season of Latin GRAMMY In The Schools, a program empowering the next generation of Latin music creators. Gloria Estefan and Edgar Barrera were featured artists at events in Miami and Las Vegas, each of which was designed to help aspiring musicians grow as artists and music industry professionals.
On Nov. 4, the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation (LGCF) and Sony Music Group’s Beyond The Instrument initiative hosted Gloria Estefan at James H. Bright / JW Johnson Elementary School — where Estefan's mother was an educator for more than 20 years. Estefan, a four-time Latin GRAMMY winner and former Latin Recording Academy Person Of The Year, called the event "deeply personal."
"This is where my mother, Gloria Fajardo, dedicated more than two decades of her life as an educator — inspiring generations of students to dream, learn, and believe in themselves," she said. "Music was always a central part of our home and our family, and I know she would be so proud to see the next generation of young minds being nurtured through it.
"Supporting music education is not just about fostering future artists," Estefan continued, "it’s about giving children the tools to express themselves, to build confidence, and to connect with their culture and community. To be able to honor my mother’s legacy in this very special way means the world to me."
As part of the celebration, students at the Miami-Dade County school performed a special tribute of "Mi Tierra" and "Conga." They also participated in percussion classes led by Alexis Soto, a previous recipient of the Tuition Assistance Scholarship who is giving back to the community as part of the Foundation’s Scholarship Alumni Network.
"Our legacy is built not only on academics, but on the arts, culture, and the power of community," said Miami-Dade County Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres. "This partnership with the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation and Gloria Estefan honors the educators who came before us, like Gloria’s mother, and uplifts the students who will carry our story forward."
Launched in 2021, Sony Music Group’s Beyond The Instrument program aims to advance equity and expand access to cutting-edge music technology education for students in traditionally underfunded schools and districts. Through this initiative, students gain hands-on experience with music tools and receive creative mentorship from Sony Music artists and songwriters. Towalame Austin, Executive Vice President, Philanthropy, Social Impact and Environment, Sony Music Group, reflected on the impact of the Miami event: "Moments like these remind us of the transformative power of music in shaping lives and communities."
One week later, Latin GRAMMY In The Schools headed west to Sunrise Manor, Nev., where Las Vegas High School was celebrating its centennial anniversary. The longest-standing high school in the state boasts a rich arts program, including an internationally recognized mariachi band.
In celebration and support of the school's musical offerings, LGCF and Latin GRAMMY-winning producer and composer Edgar Barrera, Latin GRAMMY nominee Luis Ángel "El Flaco" and música Mexicana recording artist Oscar Maydon visited the high school for an educational experience that included a musical instrument donation to the school and SLAM Nevada (a tuition-free, K-12 public charter school). The session featured student performances as well as a Q&A moderated by journalist Grecia Lopez.
The Las Vegas event was officially part of Latin GRAMMY Week 2025, a weeklong series of events honoring current nominees, creativity, excellence, and the global impact and influence of the Latin music industry that lead up to the 2025 Latin GRAMMYS, which take place Thursday, Nov. 13.
"It’s so important to give back to the next generation of music makers and encourage them to follow their dreams the same way I followed mine," said Barrera. "That’s why I’m truly honored to partner with the Latin Recording Academy on initiatives like this, which help inspire, educate, and empower the future of Latin music."
Investments in both schools will allow each to further enable the schools to develop music programs and acquire new instruments — offering more students the opportunity to pursue the arts. "This investment inspires our mission to open doors for every student to discover their talent, creativity, and confidence both inside and outside the classroom," said the SLAM Nevada Administration Team.
"Las Vegas High School greatly appreciates the support of the Latin GRAMMY Cultural Foundation and the instruments the Foundation provided for our students," added Stephen Blanco, Mariachi Director at Las Vegas High School. "Without this help, it would be a struggle to provide instruments and equipment for our 700 performing arts students."
The importance of the occasion was not lost on its special guests. Ángel said that the schools' young musicians reminded him of his own journey.
"I also started dreaming just like they are, without knowing where I could go, but with a strong desire to sing and tell real stories," said Ángel. "Music taught me that the most important thing is to sing from the heart and never forget where you’re from. If there’s one thing I want them to take away from today, it’s that dreams can come true when you pursue them with passion, discipline and humility."
Maydon was honored to represent Mexican music via Latin GRAMMY In The Schools. "Music has given me everything, and being here in front of these students reminds me of my beginnings and the importance of never giving up," he shared. "Seeing their passion inspires me to keep working and to open more doors for future generations."
The program was presented in partnership with the Dr. Simi Foundation and Sony Music Group, as part of the company’s Beyond The Instrument initiative. In addition, Dollar Tree joined the celebration as an Official Sponsor, with additional support from Gibson Gives and Sweetwater.
The Las Vegas and Miami events are two powerful examples of the Foundations' commitment to music education. Since its inception, the Latin GRAMMY In The Schools program has benefited educational institutions throughout the U.S., including in Dallas, Detroit, Kansas City, L.A., Chicago, New York, and San Antonio. Their mission is international as well, with Latin GRAMMY In The Schools events in Buenos Aires, Argentina; Mexico City, Mexico; Panama City, Panama, Arecibo, Humacao, Yauco, and San Juan in Puerto Rico; and Sevilla, Spain.
"Each Latin GRAMMY In The Schools event further advances the Foundation’s mission of ensuring the legacy of Latin music and its creators," said Raquel "Rocky" Egusquiza, the Foundation's Executive Director. "It’s inspiring to see [these] institutions’ work in fostering music education at all levels, from elementary through high school. This support not only fuels their passion for the arts but also prepares them for a future in the industry."
Latin GRAMMY In The Schools connects music students with industry professionals and supports educational music departments that face financial limitations. The Foundation invites professional musicians, artists and sound engineers to visit a variety of institutions to share their personal stories and experiences with students. Holistically, the program aims to help students optimize their opportunities, giving them an advantage and strong academic preparation to be able to compete in the music industry.
Latin music's leading lights have also heeded the call to support young musicians by participating in Latin GRAMMY In The Schools. Among the artists who have participated are Ángela Aguilar, David Bisbal, Calle 13, Pedro Capó, Camilo, Fonseca, Luis Fonsi, Becky G, KAROL G, Gente de Zona, Jesse & Joy, Natalia Lafourcade, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Christian Nodal, Laura Pausini, Carlos Vives, Wisin, and Sebastián Yatra.
